When Your Heat Starts Running: Signs It Is Time For Maintenance

Posted on: 9 December 2016

As the weather gets cold and you turn on your heating system, you may notice a few signs that it is time for your system to be serviced. While a smell coming from your heaters might be temporary dust burning off after the system was dormant, a smell that remains could be a problem. If your system is banging loudly when it turns on and off, there could be obstructions in your duct work. If you notice one room is freezing while another is too hot, you may have accidentally blocked a temperature sensor during the summer. You should have your system serviced at the beginning of each heating season to ensure the system is running efficiently.

Your System Bangs When It Turns On or Off

A loud noise coming from your duct work is pretty normal when the system turns on and off. The duct work is made out of thin metal. When the air within gets rapidly hot or cools down fast, the duct work will expand or contract accordingly. This makes a banging noise. You can try to lessen the noise by opening up one air vent at a time in the duct work. When you have the right combination of duct work vents opened, the banging should stop. If it doesn't, it's time to call for maintenance.

The Temperature Isn't Consistent

Once you make sure that all temperature sensors aren't blocked and the air can flow freely through the home, inconsistent temperatures can be a problem. You may want to check to see if you have drafts or poor insulation in rooms that are cold. If this doesn't fix the problem, you probably need your system serviced to make sure it is running efficiently. Inconsistent temperatures can make your heating system work harder than it has to.

Your Heat Doesn't Get Warm Enough

If you turn on your heat and you just aren't warm enough in the home, this could be a problem with your thermostat. A thermostat is pretty easy to replace, or you can have an HVAC technician change your thermostat when you schedule routine maintenance for your heating system.

Routine maintenance will include checking your duct work for debris and cleaning it out as necessary, changing all air filters for your system, and making sure that the system is running efficiently. The furnace will be thoroughly cleaned and checked for potential problems. When you have your system properly maintained, you can avoid potential emergency repairs.

You don't want them to get too hot, or too cold. Depending on where you live, this objective might be especially important during the hot summer months. On this blog, you will discover the best types of HVAC units to install in business establishments. Enjoy!
