How To Clean Your Condenser Unit

Posted on: 28 February 2017

Cleaning your air conditioner's condenser unit is one of the most essential, yet simple DIY HVAC maintenance jobs. It is a task that can be done even if you don't have any HVAC experience. There are a few vital components of a condenser unit that are easy to clean. Here is the best way to clean your condenser coils and fan system.

Cleaning the Coils

The key to cleaning your condenser coils is using a hose. Make sure you have a hose with plenty of water pressure that can reach all sides of the unit. Usually, water alone is enough to get all the dirt out of the coils. The coils consist of aluminum ridges that stick out. The space between each individual ridge is susceptible to getting clogged with dirt. The dirt that is deeper inside these gaps can be stubborn. You might need to spray a little bit of soap onto the coils to help break down the deep dirt. You can spray the soap or liquid cleaner onto the coils and then let it soak in for a few minutes. Then, wash it out with a strong water stream. You don't need to use a pressure washer because it would be too powerful, and it can actually bend the fragile aluminum coils. As you can see, this work is very simple. You don't even need to turn off the power to your condenser unit while you clean it.

Cleaning Your Condenser Fan

Next, you should clean the condenser fan and it's compartment. You will definitely want to turn off the power to your condenser unit before you work on the fan. To comprehensively clean the fan, you need to remove the bird guard. Most bird guards are just mounted with small screws that can be easily removed with a power drill. At this point you can use a hose vacuum to suck up any dirt and leaves on the bottom of the compartment. Also, if there is dust build up around the motor, it would be helpful to suck it up. Finally, wipe down the fan blades with a moist rag. When reattaching the bird guard, make sure you securely tightened each screw with a power drill. The condenser fan creates a lot of vibration, so you want to make sure these screws are tight enough.

With clean a clean coil and fan system, your unit will be more efficient. For more information, talk to a professional like AAA Home Services.
