A Few Steps to Take to Try to Get Portable Air Conditioners Working Again

Posted on: 19 June 2019

Portable air conditioning units make it possible to cool portions of your home on a budget. Unfortunately, the portable air conditioning units are less reliable and will need repairs or replacement much sooner than whole-house central air conditioning units. Here, you'll find a few things to try when your portable air conditioning unit doesn't work as it should.

Power Supply Issues

If the air conditioning unit seems to be running on low power or isn't getting any power at all, there are a few things to check before calling in a professional for repairs.

Check the Breaker

The breaker may be tripped or half-tripped. This could result in full or partial power loss to the unit.

Overloaded Circuit

The air conditioning unit may be plugged into an outlet that is already drawing a lot of electricity — for example, if it shares the same circuit as a refrigerator, the AC unit could lose power each time the refrigerator cooling system kicks on.

Failing Electrical Outlet

The electrical outlet could be failing. This could be the outlet itself or the electrical wiring leading up to it. If your unit isn't getting power at all, try plugging a lamp into that outlet to see if it is working.

Damaged Cord

If the cord on the air conditioning unit becomes damaged in any way, it could cause the unit to receive less power or no power, depending on how badly the cord is damaged. Check for corrosion on the plug as well as any breaks or kinks on the cord itself.

Low Air Release

If the air conditioning unit doesn't seem to be pushing out as much air as it used to, there could be a problem with the fan, or you could have a dirty filter. Try removing the filter, cleaning it, and vacuuming out the unit as best you can.

For best results in cleaning the filter, get a bin with a few inches of hot water in it. Add a few drops of a liquid dish soap and mix it up. Set the filter in the bin and allow it to soak for a few hours. Check the filter — if it seems to be holding a lot more grime, get a scrub brush and very, very gently scrub it clean. Rinse it well and allow it to dry fully before reinserting it into the unit. Test it and see.

If these steps didn't get your air conditioning unit operating properly, now's the time to call for AC repair services.

Making Your Customers Comfortable

Starting a business is a monumental accomplishment. My mom and I have talked about opening a restaurant in the past. However, we haven’t ever worked up enough courage to turn our dreams into a reality. I admire anyone who has the nerve to risk financial security in order to become an entrepreneur. I do know, however, that if you’re beginning a new business establishment, one of your goals should be to make your customers comfortable as they shop around. You don't want them to get too hot, or too cold. Depending on where you live, this objective might be especially important during the hot summer months. On this blog, you will discover the best types of HVAC units to install in business establishments. Enjoy!
